With modern pest control, the hopes are high that the answer is no. However, scientists believe that at any given time there are 19 quadrillion spiders in the world, compared to 7.5 billion people. Whether we see them or not, they lurk in the darkest corners of our homes, businesses, and lives. While many of them are harmless, there a two-poisonous species of spiders that call Ohio home. Many people may be familiar with these spiders, so we have thrown together a quiz with some fun facts to educate and test your knowledge.
- Which Spider has a red hour glass shape on its belly?
- Of this Spider species, which is the larger? Male or Female?
- T or F? The female eats the male?
- How many eggs does female lay?
If you answered Black Widow, Female, True, and about 400 eggs then you got 100%. This spider is believed to produce one of the strongest silks in the world. Their webs do not look like a traditional web, but rather a jumble of silk that resembles a cobweb. This spider can cause discomfort if bitten and in rare cases, death. Some of the common symptoms of a Black Widow bite may include:
- Difficulty Breathing
- Raised Blood Pressure
Now I mentioned before, that there were two poisonous spiders found in Ohio. Time for your next Quiz.
- What spider gets its name due to its “Shy Nature”?
- T or F? This spider only lives 2-3 years?
- T or F? This spider prefers light over dark?
- How many eggs can a female lay in its life time?
If you answered Brown Recluse, True, False, and about 250 eggs you would have gotten 100%. The Brown Recluse will spin their webs in the dark corners of your home or business. There is a slim chance that you will see them during the day since they are known to move around at night. So, detecting that you in fact have a Brown Recluse problem will be much more difficult. If you suspect that you have this problem do be aware that Brown Recluse are only active during the months of March-October. So, fighting these spiders from November-February is unnecessary.
If you do happen to get bitten by a Brown Recluse here is a list of Symptoms to look for:
- Reddened skin; followed by a blister
- Could also experience mild pain and itching
- An open sore, due to break down of tissue, that could take months to heal
In severe reaction cases, there could be symptoms such as:
- Fever and chills
- Skin Rash
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Joint pain
Will spiders rule the world? I don’t have a definitive answer for this question, but we will leave it open to your interpretation, as well as the effectiveness of your current pest control.
