Gnats: A Really Pesky Problem
Gnats: a really pesky problem
What are they?
Gnats is a simple term that describes numerous types of small, nonbiting, flying insects. These include:
-and many others
Although these insects are non-biting they are pesky little guys. Their life spans are short but they have the capability of producing numerous eggs in that short time, which makes our gnat problems that much worse.
What attracts them?
Fungus Gnats are attracted to moisture. If you have real plants in your home and are overwatering them that will be the place they swarm to. You can avoid this by not watering your plants until the soil is dry and the plants need it. Fruit flies are attracted to overripe fruit. To avoid this, throw out all fruit that is overripe or keep fruit in the fridge to keep the gnats away and prolong ripening, clean up food and drink spills quickly and keep a clean house. All Gnats are attracted to fruity smells which can be placed such as gardens (fruit, vegetable, and flower), garbage cans and body washes/perfumes.
How to get rid of them and keep them away?
First, you need to determine that you have a Gnat problem. Once you have there are some quick fix home remedies that you can try.
First, you could try a gnat trap that includes vinegar and dish soap. Mix the two ingredients in a bowl and place it in the location that you have seen gnats around. The gnats will land in the water and eventually sink down to the bottom and drown.
Electric fly exploders are also an option for your outside pests of course. Insect tape strips could be used for your indoor gnat problems. To completely get rid of your gnat problem you will need to call a pest control specialist. Because Gnats include numerous types of insects one solution will not work for all.
Keep areas where food is eaten, stored or spilled clean. Do not over water your plants and clean up any standing water in or around the outside of your home.
