This month you may notice that you have a cockroach problem, this is just the beginning of your problem. It is important that you know what type of cockroach you have in your home due to the diseases that they may be carrying and health issues they may cause.
There are over 4,000 types of cockroaches. Of these 4,000 types there are 2 that are the most common in Ohio: the German Cockroach and the American Cockroach.
|The German Cockroach: These cockroaches will find their way into your home via your pant leg, grocery bag, cardboard box, etc. Once inside your home they will then look for a warm place to make their “home.” The most common places you will find them will be in your kitchens or bathrooms. The German Cockroach can be identified by their light brown color as well as the racing stripes located behind their heads.|
|The American Cockroach: These cockroaches find their way into your home under doors, that do not have a proper weather strip, through the garage or basement windows. Once inside your home they will make their way to places such as laundry room, basement, bathroom or kitchen; warm and moist locations. These cockroaches do have the capability to bite, although very uncommon, it may only cause a problem if the bite becomes infected. The American Cockroach can be identified by the reddish color with a yellow band around their head.|
So why are they a threat?
The number of cockroaches that are in your home can be beneficial in knowing the potential threat that they carry. The larger number of cockroaches in your home the greater threat they pose. They are threats due to the 33 types of bacteria they carry on their bodies; E. coli and Salmonella for example, parasitic worms and pathogens. They are also known for causing asthma attacks to those with allergies.
Of course, there are at home treatments that can be effective. The problems that come with treating your infestation yourself is that you are not a professional. Knowing exactly what to use, where to use it, and how much to use is vital to keeping your family safe not only from the cockroaches, but the chemical necessary to take care of your infestation.
