Muskrats

Muskrats are semiaquatic rodents that can be found in Ohio wetlands, often times side by side with beavers. The muskrat is generally not considered a nuisance as they usually spend their time near creeks and rivers, but have been known to frequent backyards equipped with koi ponds. Primarily active in the dusk or dawn, they consume aquatic vegetation, frogs, crayfish and other small animals. Because they are often times mistaken for rats, many people feel that muskrats are nuisances, assuming that they carry the same diseases associated with the other rodents, however they do not carry those same diseases.
