Many different lizards call Ohio home including 6 types of Skinks. Lizards are very beneficial as they eat many insect pests and larvae. Caution should always be used when a lizard is discovered because they can produce a painful bite. Lizards can be found in a variety of different environments from locations near water to open fields and in trees.
Ohio is home to many different types of snakes and thankfully most of then are nonvenomous and harmless. Although most may be nonvenomous they are all able to bite and caution should be used if one is discovered. There are three venomous snakes that call Ohio home, Copperheads, Massasaugas, and Timber Rattlesnakes. Venomous snakes have a triangular head, elliptical pupils, nostrils and pits. If the snake has a rattle, it’s venomous.
