Why Do I Have Rodents in My Home?
Similar to many other pests, rodents head indoors in search of food, water, and shelter. If you have spills or crumbs on your floor you're more likely to attract rodents since the food is easily accessible. However, even if you keep a tidy home there's still a chance you could be dealing with these pests.
Because they're warm-blooded animals, seeking a warm place to call home is a natural instinct. During winter months, rodents will make their way into your home to stay out of bitterly cold weather outside that makes their own nests uninhabitable.
Rodent Identification
How To Identify Mice
Small in size but big into troublemaking, mice can cause great damage to your home and risk your health when they move in. These rodents are typically light brown but can be darker brown or black with smooth fur, a pointed muzzle, and large ears. They're on the smaller side of rodents size wise, maxing out at 7 inches in length with short, hair covered tails.
How To Identify Rats
Compared to mice, rats are sizably bigger and easily distinguishable by their long, hairless tails. They can be white, gray, brown, or black and measure anywhere from 6" to 10" with tails up to 9 inches in length. If you suspect you may have an infestation but haven't seen a critter run through your home, you can also identify an infestation from signs such as:
- Droppings in drawers, cupboards, or under the sink
- Signs of chewing on food packaging, including pet food bags
- Gathered nesting materials such as shredded paper, fabric, or leaves and debris
- Holes chewed to create entry points through walls and floors
While both mice and rats will cause issues, rats will leave bigger droppings, chew larger holes, and make more noise than their smaller rodent counterparts. In addition, rats typically only make their way into your home when pushed out of their own habitats due to blocked drains, flooded environments, or lack of food and water resources.
How To Identify Voles
Voles usually won't make their way into your home but can cause immense damage to your yard if not managed properly. These pests tunnel their way through your pristine property with paths 1" to 2" wide on the surface but aren't raised and have entrance holes you can see in the dirt. If you do spot a vole in your yard, they appear similar in appearance to a field mouse with short tails, small bodies, and partially hidden ears.
Voles range in size from 5 to 8 inches with large teeth used to gnaw through plant roots and systems. They can get into your home through damaged basement windows or cracks in the foundation, however it's unusual to spot one inside.
