What Are Ticks?

There's a good chance you've run into ticks before. They're the small, impossible-to-squish bugs that can burrow into your skin and be incredibly hard to remove. Other than sounding like the stuff of nightmares, ticks also pose health risks. They are known carriers of pathogens that cause diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, Heartland virus, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and tick-borne relapsing fever.

If you or your pets frequent the outdoors, it can be hard to prevent ticks from coming into your home. If you're finding lots of ticks around your home or yard, Greenix pest control professionals can help you remove and prevent a serious infestation.

How to Identify Ticks

Ticks can range in sizes and colors but generally will be relatively small bugs with roundish bodies and small heads. These bugs may be a tan color, reddish, or even brown or black, and some have white or cream-colored areas on their bodies. There are actually two major kinds of ticks—hard and soft ticks. Hard ticks have a tough outer shell on the top of their bodies called a scutum, while soft ticks do not. Although hard ticks are the ones that feel impossible to squish, soft ticks can be especially hard to remove because their mouth parts are under their bodies.

Unfortunately, finding a tick burrowed in your or your pet's skin is one of the most common ways of finding out you have ticks. You might also notice ticks crawling around your home or outdoor areas, but their size and colors can make them difficult to notice. Although ticks will venture just about anywhere to find and feed on a host, their preferred habitat is shady and moist with plenty of vegetation.

How do I prevent bringing ticks into my home?

To prevent bringing ticks into your home, check yourself and your pets for ticks after spending time outdoors. Keeping your outdoor spaces maintained and removing any extra debris, like leaves, from your yard can also help. If you have kids, keeping their play sets in sunny areas can also help prevent them from picking up ticks while outdoors.
